Here’s a plot recap:
Museum director Marcus Dupayne is desperate to convince his brother Neville to sign the new lease on the Dupayne Museum, a family heirloom. Neville wants to close the museum so he can open his own clinic.
The two of them quarrel, their sister Caroline taking Marcus’ side. That night, housekeeper Tally (Tallulah) Clutton is cycling up the museum drive when a car knocks her over.
She wakes up drowsy to see a man standing over her. She staggers to her cottage, only to notice the garage in flames. She watches in horror as Neville’s car combusts. Neville perishes in the fire.
The murder investigation commences. Dalgliesh, Tarrant and Miskin home in on Ryan Archer, a groundsman with responsibility for the petrol can which started the fire.
When he runs away after attacking the man he lives with, the police sweep in and make an arrest.
Tally recalls that the man who knocked her over was wearing a carnival mask. She says that all her colleagues knew about the museum’s potential closure: it seems everybody has a motive for Neville’s murder.
Miskin notices a bucket on the floor of Tally’s house. Dalgliesh and Miskin establish that Neville was having an affair with his secretary Andrea Fox, who is pregnant.
Dalgliesh then wonders if Neville was not the intended target of the attack, for it turns out that Marcus has links with the secret services – was he the intended victim?
Museum curator Marie Strickland gives another tour of the murder room. Receptionist Muriel insists on opening the trunk in the Brighton murder exhibit.
Dalgliesh follows her screams and finds a teenage girl dead in the trunk.
Dalgliesh is available to watch on Acorn TV with a free 7-day trial.
