Based on J.G. Farrell’s classic novel, the new six-part mini-series focuses on a British family living in Singapore at the time of the Japanese invasion in World War Two.
The cast includes Luke Treadaway (Ordeal By Innocence), David Morrissey (Britannia), Jane Horrocks (Absolutely Fabulous), Colm Meaney (Star Trek: The Next Generation), Luke Newberry (In The Flesh), Elizabeth Tan (Coronation Street), and Charles Dance (Game of Thrones).
Here’s a plot recap for the fifth episode, which aired on ITV at 9pm on Sunday 11th October 2020:
When tragedy strikes the Langfeld’s, Walter spots an opportunity to turn the situation to his advantage, suggesting a union between Nigel and Joan, and subsequently their two companies.
Despite initial reservations, he is powerless in the face of her charm.
As Japanese bombs litter Singapore, Ehrendorf returns from the front line and joins Matthew and the Major on the auxiliary fire service to tackle the growing blazes.
Despite securing their own departure, the Blacketts reject Matthew’s frantic pleas to help Vera escape, but he resolves to try all other avenues.
Elsewhere, a devastated Walter refuses to accept some shocking news.
