2021 looks set to be another wonderful year for fans of British period drama series.

All Creatures Great and Small – Season 2

What’s it about?

Based on author James Herriot’s much-loved collection of stories, this series from the makers of Downton Abbey stars Callum Woodhouse (The Durrells), Samuel West (Mr Selfridge), Anna Madeley (Patrick Melrose), and Rachel Shenton (White Gold).

Returning for a second seasonAll Creatures Great and Small chronicles the heartwarming and humorous adventures of a young country vet in the Yorkshire Dales in the 1930s.

When will it air?

Season 2 is expected to air in the UK on Channel 5 in the autumn and in the US shortly after on PBS.

ITV’s four-part drama tells the inspirational true story of justice campaigner Anne Williams as she attempts to uncover the truth about what her son’s death in 1989’s Hillsborough football tragedy.

Anne Boleyn

What’s is about?

Dramatising the final months of Anne Boleyn’s life, this three-part psychological thriller stars British model and actress Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen & Slim) as the second wife of King Henry VIII.

Boleyn was Queen of England from 1533 until 1536, when she was beheaded.

The cast also includes Amanda Burton (Silent Witness), Paapa Essiedu (Gangs of London), Thalissa Teixeira (Trigonometry), Barry Ward (Des), and Jamael Westman (Hamilton).

Around the World in Eighty Days

What’s it about?

Doctor Who star David Tennant leads the cast of this new series based on French writer Jules Verne’s classic 1873 book.

Around the World in Eighty Days follows the adventures of Phileas Fogg from London (Tennant) and his valet Passepartout (French actor Ibrahim Koma) as they attempt to circumnavigate the world in 80 days on a £20,000 wager.

Around the World in Eighty Days will premiere on BBC One in the UK in 2021.

Becoming Elizabeth – Season 1

What’s it about?

Starz’s eight-part Tudor drama series depicts the struggles of Queen Elizabeth I (German actress Alicia von Rittberg) to control her own destiny and take real power as the men around her attempt to claim her sovereignty.

Becoming Elizabeth creator Anya Reiss commented: “Drama seems to skip straight from Henry VIII’s turnstile of wives to an adult white faced Gloriana – missing out boy kings, religious fanatics, secret affairs and a young orphaned teenager trying to save herself from the vicious scramble to the top.”

Bridgerton – Season 2

What’s it about?

Based on the bestselling novels by Julia Quinn, Netflix’s hit historical romance series follows eight close-knit siblings as they look for love and happiness in Regency London high society in early 1800s England.

The second season of Bridgerton will focus on the efforts of Anthony Bridgerton, played Jonathan Bailey (Broadchurch), to find himself a wife.

When will it air?

Season 2 is expected to premiere on Netflix this Christmas.

Britannia – Season 3

What’s it about?

Starring David Morrissey (The Walking Dead), Sophie Okonedo (Death on the Nile), and Mackenzie Crook (The Office), Sky’s British historical fantasy series is set in 43AD.

The third season of Britannia sees a radical transformation in Cait’s journey as the Chosen One with a decision that will tie her to the future of her war-torn people and their ravaged land, while Aulus will come under pressure from a new and dark force.

Call the Midwife – Season 10

What’s is about?

The BBC’s long-running period drama series about a group of nurse midwives working in the East End of London returns for a tenth season – although one major cast member isn’t returning.

Slightly shorter than usual due to the difficulties of filming in 2021, the new season comprises of seven one-hour episodes.

When will it air?

Season 10 will air in early 2021 on BBC One in the UK and on PBS in the US.

Carnival Row – Season 2

What’s it about?

Set in a Victorian fantasy world filled with mythological immigrant creatures, Amazon’s hit series is led by Pirates of the Caribbean star Orlando Bloom and British model turned actress Cara Delevingne.

Carnival Row creator Travis Beacham has teased: “At the end of Season 1, all of our characters are in completely different circumstances than they started the show. And that also includes the Burge itself. The change the city goes through in the eighth and final episode is so seismic that it really sets off Season 2.”

When will it air?

Season 2 began filming in September 2019, but production was halted due to the pandemic, so we’d expect it to premiere on Amazon in early 2021.

The Chronicles of Narnia

What’s is about?

Netflix announced plans in 2018 to adapt all seven books in the Chronicles of Narnia series.

The streaming service is developing new TV series and film projects based on the classic tales by British author C.S. Lewis.

When will it air?

Details are still unconfirmed, but the first of these Narnia projects is expected to premiere exclusively on Netflix later in 2021.

A Column of Fire

What’s is about?

Following The Pillars of the Earth and World Without End, A Column of Fire is the third book in Ken Follett’s successful Kingsbridge series.

A Column of Fire follows the 1558 romance between Ned Willard and Margery Fitzgerald, continuing on through half a century of political intrigue and turmoil.

A Column of Fire is expected to premiere on Epix in the US in 2021.

Cursed – Season 2

What’s it about?

This Netflix series is a re-imagining of the Arthurian legend, telling the story of gifted teenage heroine Nimue (Katherine Langford), who is destined to become the famous Lady of the Lake.

A coming-of-age story whose themes are familiar to our own time: the obliteration of the natural world, religious terror, senseless war, and finding the courage to lead in the face of the impossible, Cursed is expected to return for a second season following the success of Season 1.

Doctor Who – Season 13

What’s is about?

The BBC’s long-running time travel drama series is back, with Broadchurch star Jodie Whitaker returning as the Thirteenth Doctor.

The eight new episodes see the TARDIS travel through time and space once more, with historical adventures set to include the Crimean War.

When will it air?

The thirteenth season of Doctor Who will air on BBC One in the UK and on BBC America in the US in late 2021.

Domina – Season 1

What’s is about?

From the director of The Luminaries, Sky’s epic upcoming historical drama is set in Ancient Rome and follows the life and the extraordinary rise of Livia Drusilla, who overcame adversity to become the most powerful woman in the world.

The eight-part series stars Kasia Smutniak (Perfect Strangers), Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones), Colette Tchantcho (The Witcher), and Isabella Rossellini (Blue Velvet).

Domina will premiere in the UK on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV this May.

 

The Elephant Man

What’s it about?

Stranger Things actor Charlie Heaton stars in BBC One’s new two-part drama from the makers of The Missing and the producer of Poldark.

The Elephant Man tells the story of Joseph Merrick, who was born in England in 1862 and appeared in a freak show as the “Elephant Man” due to his severe face and body deformities. He was later well known in London society after becoming friends with a prominent surgeon.

The Elephant Man will air on BBC One in the UK in 2021.

 

Endeavour – Season 8

What’s is about?

Shaun Evans returns as DS Endeavour Morse, alongside Roger Allam as DI Fred Thursday, in an eighth season of ITV’s Inspector Morse prequel series.

The three new feature-length episodes will be set in 1971.

Season 8 will air on ITV in the UK and on PBS in the US in 2021.

Englistan

What’s it about?

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story star Riz Ahmed created this nine-part multi-generational 20th century family drama for BBC Two.

Englistan will follow the story of three generations of a British Pakistani family, the Latifs, as they pursue their dreams over four tumultuous decades.

Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama, hinted: “Set against the familiar backdrop of the late 20th but from a point of view which feels entirely new, Englistan is the story of the birth of multicultural Britain as seen from the inside.”

Englistan will air on BBC Two in the UK in 2021.

 

The Essex Serpent

What’s it about?

Adapated from Sarah Perry’s 2016 novel by the writer of Mrs Wilson, this Apple TV+ mini-series stars Claire Danes (Homeland) and Tom Hiddleston (The Night Manager).

The Essex Serpent follows newly widowed Cora (Danes) who, having being released from an abusive marriage, relocates from Victorian London to the small village of Aldwinter in Essex, intrigued by a local superstition that a mythical creature known as the Essex Serpent has returned to the area.

When will it air?

The Essex Serpent will premiere exclusively on Apple TV+ later this year.

Father Brown – Season 9

What’s is about?

Set in the Cotswolds in the 1950s and based on the stories by GK Chesterton, the BBC’s hit daytime drama series returns for a ninth season.

Harry Potter actor Mark Williams reprises his role as the crime-busting Roman Catholic priest, alongside regulars Sorcha Cusack, Emer Kenny, Jack Deam, and John Burton.

When will it air?

Season 9 will premiere on BBC One in the UK in 2021.

The Final Round

What’s it about?

Gentleman Jack star Suranne Jones is adapting The Final Round, the memoir of five-time female world boxing champion Jane Couch.

Couch carved out her trailblazing career in the 1990s, when it was still illegal for women to box in the UK. Her memoir charts her upbringing in a fishing village through to her ascent in the boxing world. At the center of the story is Couch’s legal battle with the U.K. Boxing Board of Control to recognize female boxers.

The series is expected to premiere in 2021.

Gentleman Jack – Season 2

What’s it about?

Based on the diaries of remarkable Regency landowner Anne Lister, the BBC’s Gentleman Jack returns to Halifax, West Yorkshire for a second season of eight new episodes.

Yorkshire, 1834. All eyes are on Anne Lister and Ann Walker as they set up home together at Shibden Hall as wife and wife, determined to combine their estates and become a power couple. Anne Lister’s entrepreneurial spirit frightens the locals as much as her unconventional love life and, with Halifax on the brink of revolution, her refusal to keep a low profile becomes provocative and dangerous.

The Gilded Age – Season 1

What’s it about?

Created by Downton Abbey writer Julian Fellowes, the long-delayed The Gilded Age is set in New York in 1882 and focuses on the emerging rich and the working class.

The series follows Marian Brook, the wide-eyed young scion of a conservative family who embarks on infiltrating the wealthy neighboring family dominated by ruthless railroad tycoon George Russell.

It has been rumoured that younger versions of popular Downton Abbey characters could appear in the series!

When will it air?

The Gilded Age will premiere in the USA on HBO in 2021 and in the UK at a later date.

 

Grantchester – Season 6

What’s is about?

Outlander actor Tom Brittney is back as clergyman Will Davenport, alongside Robson Green (Soldier Soldier) as DI Geordie Keating, in a sixth season of ITV’s crime drama based on James Runcie’s novels.

Set in 1958, the first of six new episodes will see Geordie, Cathy and their family, Will, Leonard and Mrs C take a much needed holiday together.

When will it air?

Season 6 is expected to air in the UK in early 2021 on ITV and next summer in the US on PBS.

The Great – Season 2

What’s is about?

Elle Fanning (Ginger & Rosa) and Nicholas Hoult (The Favourite) are back for a second season of Hulu’s satirical, comedic drama about the rise of Catherine the Great.

Created by the Oscar-nominated writer of The Favourite and featuring “only occasional historical facts,” The Great follows Catherine’s rise from outsider to the longest-reigning female ruler in Russia’s history.

Great Expectations

What’s is about?

From Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, with producers Ridley Scott (Gladiator) and Tom Hardy (Taboo), this new six-part drama brings to life Charles Dickens’ thirteenth novel for the BBC and FX.

Writer Steven Knight commented: “I chose Great Expectations as the next work to bring to the screen not just because of the timeless characters, but also because of the very timely story. The Ipcress File

What’s is about?

ITV’s new six-part adaption of Len Deighton’s classic espionage novel stars Joe Cole (Peaky Blinders) as Harry Palmer, alongside Lucy Boynton (Bohemian Rhapsody), and Tom Hollander (The Night Manager).

Set against the backdrop of Cold War Europe in Berlin and London during the 1960, The Ipcress File is a stylish and tense tale of abducted scientists, brainwashing, inter- departmental rivalry, treason, and a possibly unwise romance.

Based on the novels by H.E. Bates and previously adapted for TV in the early ’90s, The Darling Buds of May follows the comedic adventures of the Larkin family on a farm in rural 1950s Kent.

The Durrells creator Simon Nye is writing this new version, which stars Bradley Walsh (Doctor Who) and Joanna Scanlan (The Thick of It) as Pop Larkin and his wife Ma.

SAS: Rogue Heroes is set during darkest days of World War Two and is based on Ben Macintyre’s best-selling book Rogue Heroes.

The Serpent

What’s it about?

From the makers of Poldark and Endeavour, this eight-part crime thriller set in the 1970s is based on the phenomenal true story of how one of the most elusive criminals of the 20th century was caught and brought to trial.

The Serpent is written by Ripper Street creator Richard Warlow, with a cast that includes Victoria star Jenna Coleman.

Created by Father Brown writer Jude Tindall and set in 1960s England, The Sister Boniface Mysteries sees Sister Boniface using advanced techniques for tracking down killers.

A Spy Among Friends

What’s is about?

Based on Ben Macintyre’s book, Cold War espionage thriller A Spy Among Friends stars British actors Damian Lewis (The Forsyte Saga) and Dominic West (The Affair).

The six-part mini-series from the executive producer of Homeland tells “one of the greatest spy stories ever.”

When will it air?

The series is expected to premiere towards the end of 2021 on Spectrum Originals in the US and on BritBox in the UK.

Stephen

What’s is about?

Stephen is a three-part follow-up to ITV’s acclaimed 1999 drama The Murder of Stephen Lawrence, starring Hugh Quarshie (Holby City), Sharlene Whyte (Small Axe), and Steve Coogan (Stan & Ollie).

Executive produced by Line of Duty creator Jed Mercurio, the new mini-series portrays events from 2006, thirteen years after Stephen Lawrence’s death on the evening of 22 April 1993 in a racially motivated attack whilst waiting for a bus in Well Hall Road, Eltham.

When will it air?

Stephen will air on ITV in the UK in 2021.

 

Taboo – Season 2

What’s it about?

Created by actor Tom Hardy and Peaky Blinders writer Steven Knight, Taboo launched way back in January 2017 and a second season is could finally be on the way this year.

Set in 1814, the first season followed James Keziah Delaney (Tom Hardy), believed to be long dead, who returned home to London from Africa to inherit what is left of his father’s shipping empire and rebuild a life for himself.

Eight new episodes of the dark period drama will see our anti-hero “continue to explore many realities as he takes his band of misfits to a new world.”

When will it air?

Season 2 will hopefully air towards the end of 2021 on BBC One in the UK and on FX in the USA.

Three Little Birds

What’s it about?

Written by Sir Lenny Henry (Broadchurch, The Long Song), this life affirming six-part drama is inspired by his mother’s stories about leaving Jamaica in the 1950’s for Great Britain, which became her lifelong home and where she raised her family.

Three Little Birds narrates the adventures of gregarious sisters Leah and Chantrelle, who hail from St Anne’s district in Jamaica, and their virtuous, bible-loving acquaintance, Hosanna as they board a cruise ship heading for a new life in Great Britain.

When will it air?

Three Little Birds will premiere on ITV in the UK later in 2021.

 

A Very British Scandal

What’s it about?

The BBC’s three-part follow-up to 2018 hit A Very English Scandal focuses on the divorce of the Duke and Duchess of Argyll, one of the most notorious, extraordinary and brutal legal cases of the 20th century.

Written by Sarah Phelps (The Pale Horse), A Very British Scandal stars Claire Foy (The Crown) and Paul Bettany (The Da Vinci Code).

When will it air?

A Very British Scandal will premiere later this year (or in early 2022) on BBC One in the UK, and on Amazon Prime Video worldwide.

Victoria – Season 4

What’s it about?

A fourth season of ITV’s historical drama series about the life of Queen Victoria hasn’t been officially confirmed, but it is apparently in development, even if there might be a bit of a wait.

Victoria creator Daisy Goodwin has teased ominously that it’ll be “an absolute humdinger, because… well, you can go to Wikipedia to find out!”

When will it air?

Season 4 may air in late 2021 on ITV in the UK and on PBS in the US.

Vienna Blood – Season 2

What’s is about?

Set in 1900s Austria, this BBC period crime drama is adapted from the best-selling Liebermann novels by Frank Tallis by Sherlock writer Steve Thompson.

Returning for a second season are Matthew Beard (The Imitation Game), Conleth Hill (Game of Thrones), Charlene McKenna (Ripper Street), and Amelia Bullmore (Gentleman Jack).

What’s is about?

Netflix’s Vikings follow-up series is set a hundred years after the original show and features “the most famous Vikings known to history.”

The Winter King

What’s is about?

This new TV series from the makers of His Dark Materials adapts the first of Bernard Cornwell’s Warlord Chronicles novels, set in Britain during the time of King Arthur.

The Winter King sees Derfel Cadarn, a former warrior sworn to Arthur and now an elderly monk, tell the story of how Arthur became warlord of Dark Age Britain despite illegitimacy to the throne.

When will it air?

The Winter King will premiere on Epix in the US in 2021.

The Witchfinder – Season 1

What’s it about?

Created by Alan Partridge writers Neil and Rob Gibbons, The Witchfinder stars Daisy May Cooper (The Personal History of David Copperfield) and Tim Key (Alan Partridge).

BBC Two’s new six-part comedy series follows a witchfinder and his suspect on a road-free road trip through an England gripped by civil war, famine and plague in the 1647.

The Witchfinder will air on BBC Two in the UK in 2021.

 

World on Fire – Season 2

What’s it about?

BBC One’s epic international period drama series set in World War II returns for a second season.

The second season of World on Fire will span the years 1940 to 1941, and all the main cast are expected to return, including Oscar-winner Helen Hunt (As Good As It Gets), Sharpe star Sean Bean, and Lesley Manville (Mum).

The Yorkshire Ripper

What’s it about?
