Netflix confirms ‘Enola Holmes 3’ plans
There’s going to be another Enola Holmes movie!
Based on Nancy Springer’s book series about the younger sister of Sherlock Holmes, the first Enola Holmes film was a mid-pandemic hit when it dropped on Netflix in September 2020.
With over 76 million households in its first month on Netflix and lots of positive reviews, inevitably a sequel was announced and Enola Holmes 2 premiered last November.
However, a year on from the second movie, we’ve only just got some firm details about another follow-up from Netflix.
The official announcement that a third Enola Holmes movie is definitely in development comes from the Head of Netflix Film, Scott Stuber.
He was speaking to Collider at at the grand reopening of the American Cinematheque at The Egyptian Theatre Hollywood earlier this month.
Stuber spoke fondly of Netflix’s continuing working relationship with British actress Millie Bobby Brown, who shot to fame in Stranger Things in 2016.
“You know, she’s such a great homegrown star for us,” he said. “I mean, obviously, Stranger Things is huge for us in that, and watching her grow as an actress.”
“We have a film called Damsel with her in the spring, which I’m really excited about, [from] Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. Then, getting that character right,” Stuber continued.
Getting on to the topic of the Enola Holmes franchise, he commented: “The Holmes IP is weirdly elastic. Obviously, Warner Bros. did an incredible job with Downey and Jude Law, so this idea that we can extend that IP with her is exciting.”
Confirming the Enola Holmes 3 news that we’ve been waiting to hear, Stuber said: “So, we’re working once again on a screenplay to try to get that. But yes, aspiration. I’d like to do another one.”
It does sound like the project is in the very early stages, but with the writers’ and actors’ strikes only just over, this isn’t surprising.
Hopefully there’ll be a more positive update next year, but we expect to see Enola Holmes return on Netflix in 2025.
Millie Bobby Brown previously expressed her own desire to make another sequel, saying in 2022: “I would love to be a part of another one.”
The actress spoke of wanting to see the character “do more cases, be put under pressure, be put in crazy situations, make her feel vulnerable again.”
Enola Holmes 2 ended with Henry Cavill’s Sherlock Holmes meeting his new flatmate, who turned out to be a certain Dr. John Watson, played by former EastEnders star Himesh Patel.
We fully expect Cavill and Patel to return in the next movie – and perhaps even get their own spin-off!
