‘Grantchester’ hints at Season 9 story lines – and why Will leaves!

The makers of Grantchester have revealed some hints for the next season.

Fans in American can currently watch the show’s eighth season on Sunday nights on PBS.

However, UK viewers are patiently waiting to find out when the long-running crime drama will return on ITV (the rumours are now suggesting an autumn launch here).

In the meantime, the Grantchester cast are already busy shooting the show’s ninth season in England.

Set in 1961, next year’s run will see Tom Brittney depart the series after five years playing Reverend Will Davenport.

Fortunately, original star Robson Green will carry on playing Geordie!

He’ll be joined by Rishi Nair (New TricksWhitstable Pearl), who’ll make his debut as brand new vicar Alphy Kotteram.

Alongside Geordie, all your other favourite regular characters are going to be back too!

As the next season begins, we’re told that life in 1961 is good for Will and Geordie.

“The families are always together, from Sunday lunches to planning summer holidays and with honorary grandparents Mrs. C and Jack, and adopted uncles Daniel and Leonard, it’s one big happy family!”

Will is set to be approached with “a life-changing offer” though – will he decide to leave Grantchester and Geordie behind? (We think you can guess the answer to this question!)

Geordie will find himself with no one to turn to as he struggles with “personal loss and ever-growing family conflict between Cathy and teenage daughter, Esme.”

When he arrests an intruder breaking into the Vicarage, however, he discovers that his days of working with a vicar aren’t over yet!

Cue the introduction of Reverend Alphy Kotteram – but with his “instinctive distrust for authority,” Will’s replacement has “absolutely no desire to get involved in murder investigations.”

Of course, sooner or later, Alphy and Geordie find that they have “a lot more in common than they first think,” and Alphy realises that murder is never far away in Grantchester…

Mysteries in Season 9 will include everything from “deadly circuses, abandoned babies, and hostile historians to vanishing valets and murderous satirists.”

Geordie and Alphy will see “how religion can be corrupted, but also how faith, love and friendship can offer hope – and renewal.”

This all sounds like classic Grantchester – we can’t wait!

Season 9 will premiere on PBS in the US on and on ITV in the UK in 2024.
