‘Harry Potter’ television series is being planned
HBO Max are reportedly making plans for a TV series based around the world of Harry Potter.
All seven Harry Potter novels were previously adapted as movies between 2001 and 2011.
The stories chronicle the lives of a young wizard, Harry Potter, and his friends Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
The eight movies have grossed over $7 billion worldwide, so inevitably WarnerMedia is looking to expand its Harry Potter universe with a series on its streaming service HBO Max.
The Hollywood Reporter says that “executives have had a series of meetings with writers with the goal of bringing the blockbuster franchise to television.”
While the project is only in “early development,” HBO Max is apparently “engaged in multiple conversations with potential writers exploring various ideas” for a series.
No specific series have yet been greenlit, however, with the official line from HBO Max and Warner Bros. still being: “There are no Harry Potter series in development at the studio or on the streaming platform.”
In the meantime, a third Fantastic Beasts movie is filming right now, having been postponed last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
HBO Max is currently working on at least one new Game of Thrones spin-off – as well as Friends reunion project, and a Sex and the City revival series – so it makes sense that they would also be exploring the possibilities open to them with the Harry Potter rights.
The complete 8-film Harry Potter box set is available on DVD on Amazon.
