Is Keira Knightley’s ‘Colette’ worth watching? Here’s what the reviews say
Keira Knightley’s new movie Colette is out now in UK cinemas.
Based upon the life of the famous French novelist, this biographical period drama is brought to the screen by Still Alice director Wash Westmoreland.
Colette tells the story of Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, a young woman from a country village who was pushed by her husband to write novels for him.
When the books become a huge success in early 20th century Paris, Colette defies gender roles as she overcomes societal constraints.
Knightley plays the titular Colette, alongside Dominic West (The Hour) as her husband. The all-star cast also includes Eleanor Tomlinson, best known as Demelza from the BBC’s Poldark.
We’ve rounded up a selection of reviews for the mini-series to help you decide if you’d like to watch it:
“All the affairs and scandals that a French literary genius could wish for, with the bonus of a modern heroine and a story that acknowledges the diversity that has always been with us.” – Empire
“These are fun, mischievous, and intelligent characters to spend time with, even when they’re behaving less than nobly.” – Vulture
“Keira Knightley is on top form in exhilarating literary biopic. The life of Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette makes for fascinating drama in a nuanced and inspiring film with a luminous central performance.” – The Guardian
“From its gorgeous costumes by Andrea Flesch and shimmering camerawork by Giles Nuttgens to a score of surpassing beauty by British composer Thomas Adès, Colette is a movie that dazzles the senses.” – Rolling Stone
“Colette’s story is a good one … but here it’s shakily told. As a tale about a woman whose life was defined by fire, “Colette” lacks much of a spark.” – The Washington Post
“It’s an admittedly muted piece, with an episodic quality that takes something of its cue from the Bildungsroman plotting of the four Claudine books themselves.” – The Telegraph
