‘Master and Commander’ is finally getting a second movie

A brand new Master and Commander movie is being developed.

Based on the novels in Patrick O’Brian’s Aubrey–Maturin series, the original movie came out in 2003.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World starred Russell Crowe (Gladiator) as Royal Navy captain Jack Aubrey, and Paul Bettany (The Da Vinci Code) as the ship’s surgeon, Dr. Stephen Maturin.

Despite making over $210 million worldwide at the box office, and receiving ten Oscar nominations, a follow-up was never made.

Until now!

A Monster Calls writer Patrick Ness is working on the script for another Master and Commander movie.

The story will focus on “the early days of Aubrey,” according to Deadline.

Ness’s script is apparently “based on the first book in the series, which shows a young Aubrey as he is given his first command and also explores how his friendship with his naval surgeon, Stephen Maturin, begins.”

Produced by 20th Century studios, the new Master and Commander movie will be released in 2022 or 2023.

There’s no news on who will direct or star in the movie yet, but Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany are apparently unlikely to return.

Discussing why a sequel to his original film was never made, director Peter Weir explained in 2005: “I think that while it did well…ish at the box office, it didn’t generate that monstrous, rapid income that provokes a sequel.”

The first Master and Commander movie is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
