‘Outlander’ wins big in our ‘Best of 2018’ British period drama awards!

Outlander has landed three of our four awards celebrating the best of 2018’s British period dramas.

Over two and a quarter million votes were cast by the readers of BritishPeriodDramas.com in the last few months of 2018, with fans voting for their highlights of the past year.

Here’s a summary of the winners:

2018’s best British period drama movie

On the big screen, the catchily-titled The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society beat off strong competition from Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, Harry Potter prequel Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, and Netflix’s 14th century Scottish drama Outlaw King.

The adaptation of Annie Barrows and Mary Ann Shaffer’s 2008 historical novel starred no less than four Downton Abbey alumni, including Jessica Brown Findlay (Lady Sybil), Lily James (Lady Rose), Matthew Goode (Henry Talbot) and Penelope Wilton (Isobel Crawley).

The story follows Lily James as journalist Juliet Ashton, who becomes intrigued by a secret book society established during the German occupation of the Channel Islands during World War 2.

2018’s best British period drama TV actress

In the Best Actress category, Caitriona Balfe’s performance as Claire Fraser in Outlander topped the poll.

She was closely followed by newcomer Ann Skelly in the BBC’s Death and Nightingales adaptation, Bodyguard star Keeley Hawes for her role as matriarch Louisa in The Durrells, and Icelandic actress Heida Reed playing Elizabeth Warleggan in Poldark.

2018’s best British period drama TV actor

The fight for the top position in the Best Actor category was so close that ultimately we declared a draw between Poldark star Aidan Turner and Outlander star Sam Heughan.

Between them the two actors took a whopping 90.03% of all the poll’s votes!

There was still room near the top for 50 Shades actor Jamie Dornan in Death and Nightingales, Alexander Dreymon as Uhtred of Bebbanburg in The Last Kingdom, and George Blagden’s turn as Louis XIV in the final season of Versailles.

2018’s best British period drama TV series

It may have been too close to call in the Best Actor poll, but there was a clear winner when it came to the Best TV Series of 2018.

The fourth season of Outlander topped a very high quality set of shows, following another excellent year of British period dramas on television.

Rounding out the top of the list were the penultimate season of Poldark and the last ever episodes of Versailles, alongside 9th Century historical drama The Last Kingdom, the BBC’s long-running Call the Midwife, and Inspector Morse prequel Endeavour.
