‘Plebs’ has good news and bad news for fans of the hit comedy

ITV has announced the future of its award-winning sitcom Plebs.

Set in ancient Rome, the comedy series launched almost a decade ago in March 2013.

Five seasons have aired since then, with the most recent concluding nearly two years ago.

The show’s status had been left uncertain, but it’s now been officially confirmed that Plebs has been cancelled by ITV.

However, it’s not all bad news!

The boys are back for one final feature-length adventure this autumn.

Premiering exclusively on new free streaming service ITVX, Plebs will come at an end with an 85-minute special titled Plebs: Soldiers Of Rome.

Here’s our first look at the four returning main stars: Ryan Sampson, Tom Basden, Tom Rosenthal, and Jon Pointing.

They’ll be joined by Patrick Baladi (The Office) as Roman commander General Diomedes, Tori Allen-Martin (London Kills) as warrior queen Barbronelda, and Kåre Conradi (Norsemen) as Barbarian leader Segimundus.

The upcoming special was actually first discussed in April 2020, but production was heavily delayed by the coronavirus pandemic and only finished shooting earlier this summer.

The episode was filmed in Bulgaria and Wales, and we’re told that “the backdrop of war allows their adventures to unfold on an epic scale.”

The official synopsis reads: “Marcus, Grumio, Jason and Aurelius join the army in peace-time, hoping to win respect, romance and discounts at participating restaurants. But when war’s declared, they’re sent to fight on the front line for a cause they don’t believe in. Now their main interest is the struggle for survival…

“The journey takes our new recruits from their humdrum lives in Rome to the army garrison and tribal villages on the Empire’s edge.”

Plebs: Soldiers Of Rome is expected to premiere in the UK on ITVX before the end of the year.

It’ll then air on regular TV at a later date.
