‘Grantchester’ star Tom Brittney could be the new Superman!
Tom Brittney is reportedly auditioning for the role of Superman later this month.
After Enola Holmes actor Henry Cavill stepped down as the iconic superhero last year, speculation has been wild about who could be his replacement.
A brand new movie called Superman: Legacy is due to begin filming in January 2024, so Warner Bros and DC Films are keen to find the next Clark Kent very soon.
The studios have apparently spent months watching “dozens of audition tapes,” and a second round of testing is expected to take place imminently.
Superman has been played by various actors over the years, perhaps most famously by Christopher Reeve in four movies between 1978 and 1987.
British actor Henry Cavill made his debut as the son of Jor-El in 2013’s Man of Steel film, but the 40-year-old actor is now thought to be too old for the new planned iteration of the character.
Superman: Legacy director and writer James Gunn, the American filmmaker behind Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies, will be holding the first in-person screen tests around 18-20 June.
Deadline reports that Tom Brittney is one of the actors set to audition, alongside fellow British star Nicholas Hoult.
Brittney has played Reverend Will Davenport in ’50s crime drama Grantchester since 2019, and the 32-year-old Kent-born actor has also appeared in Call the Midwife and Outlander.
Currently starring in the loosely-historical comedy The Great, which debuted its third season last month, Hoult previously played Beast in the X-Men superhero franchise.
Superman: Legacy has a release date marked for 11 July 2025, although this is subject to change with the ongoing writers’ strikes happening in the US.
Two of our favourite British period drama actresses are also said to be testing for the part of Lois Lane.
Emma Mackey from Emily and Death on the Nile will be auditioning to be Superman’s love interest.
Also in the race to be the new Lois Lane is Phoebe Dynevor, best known as Daphne in Bridgerton.
Tom Brittney will be back our screens in brand new Grantchester this summer!
Season 8 premieres in the US this July on Masterpiece on PBS, and a UK launch date is likely to be announced by ITV soon.
If Brittney does land the Superman role, we predict that he sadly won’t have the time to return in future seasons of Grantchester.
Grantchester is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
