Forty years after the original adaptation set viewership records, Barbara Taylor Bradford’s most beloved heroine, Emma Harte returns to the small screen. Channel 4’s new eight-part reimagining of A Woman of Substance offers a fresh perspective on the saga of Emma Harte, tracing her journey from a lowly manor house maid to the head of a global business empire.

Adapted by screenwriters Katherine Jakeways and Roanne Bardsley, the series remains faithful to the novel’s dual-timeline structure. We first meet Emma in 1911 as a teenage housemaid at Fairley Hall in Yorkshire. Portrayed by Jessica Reynolds, this younger Emma is driven by a quiet, fierce determination to escape the rigid class constraints of Edwardian England after a betrayal by the aristocratic Fairley family changes the course of her life.

Parallel to this, the series explores Emma’s life in the 1970s. Brenda Blethyn takes on the role of the elder matriarch, a retail tycoon dealing with the fallout of her vast legacy. While the original 1985 production was a hallmark of its era, this version focuses on the grit and business acumen required for a woman to build such an empire in the mid-20th century.

The production boasts an impressive ensemble cast. Emmett J. Scanlan stars as Adam Fairley, alongside Leanne Best and Ewan Horrocks. Fans of the original will also note a shift in tone; while the Yorkshire moors remain a central, atmospheric character, the script places a greater emphasis on the political and social shifts Emma is faced with as she moves through the decades.

This new adaptation aims to satisfy both long-term fans of Bradford’s work and a new audience looking for a substantial, character-driven period piece. It is a story of resilience, social mobility, and the personal cost of ambition, told with the visual scale one expects from a modern British prestige drama.

A Woman of Substance premiered on Channel 4 on Wednesday 11 March and is available to stream on the Channel 4 player.
