An eleven-year-old chemistry enthusiast turns detective in Flavia, a period mystery starring Molly Belle Wright, Martin Freeman, Jonathan Pryce and Toby Jones. A new US trailer introduces Alan Bradley’s young sleuth ahead of the film’s American cinema release as Flavia: Girl Detective on 4 December 2026.

Murder at the manor

Set in England in 1951, the story centres on Flavia de Luce, whose interests include both chemistry and poisons. Her family has been living in its now crumbling country house for five centuries, but life at the estate takes an unexpected dark turn when she discovers a body in the cucumber patch.

For Flavia, the discovery presents an opportunity to put her scientific knowledge to practical use. The investigation becomes very personal when her father, Havilland, confesses to the murder, so becomes determined to find out what really happened.

Her attempts to clear his name bring her into conflict with the local police, while the killer remains at large. The mystery also exposes secrets about her father and her missing mother, Harriet, whose past as a spy adds another complication to the family history.

Who stars in Flavia?

Molly Belle Wright plays Flavia, with Freeman as Havilland and Hannah New as Harriet. Jones plays Inspector Hewitt, while Pryce appears as Dr Kissing. The supporting cast includes Annette Badland as Mrs Mullet and Ariella Glaser as Flavia’s sister Ophelia.

Bharat Nalluri, whose previous films include Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day and The Man Who Invented Christmas, directs. Susan Coyne adapted Bradley’s bestselling Flavia de Luce novels for the screen. The film pairs its country-house murder investigation with a family adventure built around an unusually resourceful young heroine.
