Johnny Depp  stars as Ebezener Scrooge, one of literature’s most famous misers in Ebenezer, a new adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, arriving in cinemas on 13 November 2026.

Directed by Ti West, best known for the horror films X, Pearl and MaXXXine, the film promises a darker, more frightening interpretation of Dickens’ much-loved Christmas ghost story.

What is Ebenezer about?

Set in Victorian London, Ebenezer centres on the wealthy but bitter Ebenezer Scrooge, a businessman whose contempt for Christmas can be matched only by his indifference towards others.

On Christmas Eve, Scrooge receives a terrifying visit from the ghost of his former business partner, Jacob Marley, who warns him of the consequences of his selfish existence.

Three supernatural visitors subsequently take Scrooge on a journey through his past, present and possible future, forcing him to confront painful memories, neglected relationships and the prospect of dying alone.

The film explores whether the elderly miser can change his ways before it is too late.

Who stars in Ebenezer?

Depp leads an impressive ensemble cast, with Sir Ian McKellen playing Jacob Marley and Rupert Grint appearing as Scrooge’s long-suffering employee, Bob Cratchit.

Sam Claflin plays Scrooge’s nephew Fred, while Andrea Riseborough portrays the Ghost of Christmas Past and Tramell Tillman takes on the role of the Ghost of Christmas Present.

Daisy Ridley, Ellie Bamber, Arthur Conti, Charlie Murphy and Henry Lloyd-Hughes also feature.

The screenplay is by Nathaniel Halpern.

Depp surprised fans at San Diego Comic-Con when he appeared in character as Scrooge during an immersive promotional event before introducing the film’s trailer.

With its supernatural imagery and distinctly Gothic atmosphere, Ebenezer looks set to offer something different from the more traditional screen adaptations of Dickens’ 1843 novella.

Ebenezer opens in UK and US cinemas on 13 November 2026.
