‘The Crown’ has revealed its new Prince Philip for the final seasons
Netflix has announced the latest actor to play Prince Philip in The Crown.
The award-winning period drama series about the reign of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom launched in 2016, with Claire Foy and Matt Smith leading the original cast.
They were replaced as the Queen and Prince Philip in the third season last year by Olivia Colman (The Favouite) and Tobias Menzies (Outlander).
A fourth season is on the way this winter with Colman and Menzies returning, before another all-new cast will take over for the fifth and sixth seasons of The Crown.
We’d already had confirmed that Imelda Staunton (Harry Potter) and Lesley Manville (World on Fire) would be playing the new Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret.
And now we know who’s been cast as the show’s third Prince Philip!
Netflix revealed this week that Welsh actor Jonathan Pryce has won the role.
He’s expected to begin filming the fifth season in the latter half of next year.
The 73-year-old star was nominated for Best Actor at this year’s Oscars for his performance as Pope Francis in Netflix’s The Two Popes.
His other roles include playing the Bond villain in Tomorrow Never Dies, Sam Lowry in Brazil, Juan Perón in 1996’s Evita movie, and the High Sparrow in Game of Thrones.
Pryce commented: “I am delighted to be working with Netflix again. The positive experience I had making The Two Popes has given me the confidence to tackle the daunting prospect of portraying Prince Philip.”
He added: “To be doing so with Peter Morgan and the company of Imelda and Lesley will be a joy.”
The Crown recently received a number of nominations for the upcoming Emmy Awards, which will take place in September.
Season 5 will premiere on Netflix in 2022, followed by Season 6 in 2023.
The Crown is available to buy on DVD on Amazon.
