A new historical drama is heading to Apple TV this October, that tells the remarkable story behind one of the 20th century’s greatest feats of exploration.
Tenzing stars Genden Phuntsok as the legendary Himalayan mountaineer Tenzing Norgay, who, alongside New Zealander Edmund Hillary, became one of the first two people confirmed to reach the summit of Mount Everest in 1953.
The film is directed by Jennifer Peedom, and also stars Tom Hiddleston, Willem Dafoe and Outlander star Caitríona Balfe.
What is Tenzing about?
Based on true events, Tenzing tells the story of Tenzing Norgay and his struggle to earn a place on the British expedition that were attempting to reach the summit of Mount Everest.
Encouraged by his wife, Dawa, Tenzing finds an ally in expedition secretary Jill Henderson. Together, they must convince expedition leader Colonel John Hunt that Tenzing belongs on the climbing team rather than simply serving its Western members.
The film also explores the very different meanings attached to the mountain. While the Western climbers regard Everest as a formidable challenge to be conquered, Tenzing knows it as Chomolungma, the sacred “Mother Goddess”.
Set against the spectacular but dangerous Himalayan landscape, the story explores a time of class, empire, and the trust that developed between Tenzing and Edmund Hillary.
Who is in the cast of Tenzing?
Genden Phuntsok leads the cast as Tenzing Norgay, with Tom Hiddleston as fellow mountaineer Edmund Hillary.
Willem Dafoe plays British expedition leader Colonel John Hunt, while Caitríona Balfe stars as expedition secretary Jill Henderson.
The cast also includes Thinley Lhamo as the young Dawa, Tenzin Dalha as the young Tenzing and Johnny Flynn as mountaineer George Mallory.

Where can I watch Tenzing?
Tenzing will be released in selected cinemas on 9 October 2026.
The film will then be available to stream worldwide on Apple TV from 16 October 2026, including in the UK and Ireland.
The historical adventure runs for approximately two hours and five minutes.
