‘Summer of Rockets’ recap: What happened in Episode 5?

Summer of Rockets continued on BBC Two in the UK tonight.

Written and directed by Stephen Poliakoff (Dancing on the EdgeThe Lost Prince), the BBC’s new six-part mini-series stars Keeley Hawes (The Durrells) and Toby Stephens (Lost In Space)

Set in the UK during the tumultuous summer of 1958, Summer Of Rockets follows Samuel Petrukhin, a Russian-born Jewish inventor and businessman, who specialises in manufacturing hearing aids. Following the Soviet’s launch the first intercontinental ballistic missile, and the start of the Space Race, fear permeates the lives of all.

Here’s a plot recap for the fifth episode, which aired at 9pm on Wednesday 19th June 2019:

Samuel (Toby Stephens) wakes up in hospital, two days after being shot in the arm at the airfield. His family has been told that a soldier went berserk and has now been caught.

Richard (Linus Roache) and Kathleen (Keeley Hawes) visit Samuel in the hospital, and he warns them not to discuss their search for Anthony on their home telephone as the secret service might be listening in.

Mr Field (Mark Bonnar) has put a 24-hour guard on Samuel’s home and factory, but Samuel is very suspicious of him – he conveniently took an urgent phone call just before the gunman attacked.

Samuel decides that his family should stay in separate locations for a while, with Sasha (Toby Woolf) back at school, Miriam (Lucy Cohu) at her sister’s, and Hannah (Lily Sarcofsky) at Esther’s (Rose Ayling-Ellis).

Samuel goes to see Mr Field at his office and finds him looking stunned in the corner of the room: the office had been ransacked.
