Call the Midwife: new spin-off series and feature film announced

Filming of the Call the Midwife two-part Christmas special and Series 15 is already underway. The special will be set in Poplar and more further afield in Hong Kong!

Fans of the series will be delighted to hear that two major new projects have been announced: a prequel film, set in Poplar during the Second World War, which will “delve into the deeper past” of Nonnatus House, and a film which will be set in 1972. The film will be set abroad and feature the current cast. Both projects have been commissioned for the BBC, Neal Street, and US co-producers PBS and are both due to premiere in 2026.

The film and series will be produced by series creator Heidi Thomas, with executive producers Pippa Harris and Anne Triklebank also on board.

What is Series 15 about?

According to the official synopsis:

“When senior members of the Nonnatus House staff head to Hong Kong on a mercy mission, the younger midwives are left to cope alone.

“As the Christmas action shifts between the sun-drenched Far East and a snowy East End, Sister Julienne suddenly finds herself excited about the Order’s future. After years of battling change, she decides to embrace it, work with it, and see what love can do. This change of energy reverberates throughout series 15.

“The new series kicks off in 1971 with several of the ladies embracing Women’s Lib and burning their bras outside Nonnatus House. As the year unfolds, we see the team handle cases including premature birth, placenta previa, kidney cancer, tuberculosis and slavery.”
