‘Downton’ team already ‘know a direction’ for second movie’s plot

The writer of the Downton Abbey movie says he has “very loose ideas” for a possible sequel.

Based on ITV’s hugely popular period drama series, the long-awaited Downton film has been a smash hit in the UK and the US.

The team behind the movie have promised that a follow-up would be likely, as long as the first movie was a financial success.

Producer Gareth Neame revealed that they already had “a plan” for a sequel.

He told Digital Spy: “We’re percolating [ideas], back of the mind… We’ll know soon and how popular it’s been, or whether people just thought it was for the TV and that was that. I hope it’s not the latter.”

Julian Fellowes, who wrote the movie and every episode of the TV show, confirmed that he has “very loose ideas” for the sequel’s plot.

He said: “I mean, only so that we don’t have to start from scratch if there is one. We know a direction we would go in, and who knows … It all depends on how the picture is received.”

The follow-up’s story is rumoured to be based around the revelation made in the scene between Mary and Violet at the end of the first movie, pictured at the top of this article.

While we wait for more news, it’s been confirmed where the official touring Downton Abbey exhibition will be on display next.
