‘Downton Abbey’ star responds to fans’ hopes for Tom and Mary to be a couple
Allen Leech has revealed how he feels about one of Downton Abbey fans’ biggest unfulfilled wishes.
Ever since the show killed off Matthew Crawley and Lady Sybil in the hit period drama’s third season, many fans had been hoping to see Matthew’s widow Lady Mary and Sybil’s widower Tom Branson become a couple.
Allen Leech, who played Tom, weighed in with his feelings on the potential pairing, telling Deadline: “I think [Tom and Mary] was always just a friendship, and people saw it as more.”
The Irish actor joked: “Branson would want to cast the net a little further than the next sister. If something happens to her, [would it be] ‘Edith, how you doing?’”
Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes himself has even admitted that he “toyed with the idea” of Mary having a romantic relationship with Tom. Read what he had to say here.
Leech also revealed that Matthew Crawley was originally going to end up with Sybil, not Lady Mary – and that Tom was only meant to be in three episodes!
The Downton Abbey movie is expected to begin filming in early 2018, so fans could still see their wish come true!
