Emmy Awards 2018 winners revealed, with big wins for ‘The Crown’

It was a successful evening for British talent at the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards last night.

British stars Claire Foy, Thandie Newton, Matthew Rhys, writer Charlie Brooker, director Stephen Daldry and comedian John Oliver all scooped awards at the ceremony in Los Angeles.

Netflix’s acclaimed Royal drama series The Crown scored two awards last night.

Claire Foy won ‘Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series’ for her role as Queen Elizabeth II, while Stephen Daldry won the award for ‘Directing for a Drama Series’.

This follows the The Crown‘s three wins at last week’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards last week for ‘Best Period Costumes’, ‘Best Drama Casting’ and ‘Best Cinematography (Single-Camera Series, Hour)’, bringing the show’s 2018 total to an impressive five awards.

The biggest winner this year was Game of Thrones, with nine wins.

Claire Foy described her two seasons on The Crown as “the most extraordinary two-and-a-half years of my life” in her acceptance speech.

The English actress, soon to be seen in The Girl in the Spider’s Web, added: “I was given a role I never thought I would ever get a chance to play, and I met people who I will love for ever and ever.

“And the show goes on, which makes me so proud. So I dedicate this to the next cast, the next generation, and I also dedicate this to [co-star] Matt Smith.”
