Anthony Hopkins and Matthew Goode star in ‘Freud’s Last Session’ trailer
Sir Anthony Hopkins is back with a new period drama set in the 1930s!
Freud’s Last Session sees the 86-year-old Welsh actor play Sigmund Freud, alongside Downton Abbey actor Matthew Goode as Narnia author C.S. Lewis.
Born in 1856, the Austrian neurologist became the founder of psychoanalysis before he died in London in 1939.
“On the eve of the Second World War, two of the greatest minds on the twentieth century, C.S. Lewis and Sigmund Freud, converge for their own personal battle over the existence of God,” the official synopsis reveals.
We’re told that the movie “interweaves the lives of Freud and Lewis, past, present, and through fantasy, bursting from the confines of Freud’s study on a dynamic journey.”
Freud’s Last Session also explores Freud’s unique relationship with his daughter Anna, and Lewis’ unconventional relationship with his best friend’s mother.

Freud’s Last Session is adapted by Mark St. Germain (The God Committee) from his own play of the same name.
Joining Hopkins and Goode is Liv Lisa Fries (Babylon Berlin) as Anna, alongside Jodi Balfour (The Crown), Stephen Campbell Moore (The History Boys), Jeremy Northam (Gosford Park), and Orla Brady (Mistresses).
When’s the release date?
Freud’s Last Session is expected to arrive in UK cinemas in early 2024, but an exact date hasn’t yet been confirmed.
The movie already had a limited release in American cinemas last month, and it’s expected to make its streaming debut in the US soon.
It’s playing in Canada right now, follow a release on 12 January, and in Spain it’ll arrive on 8 March, followed by a 28 March release in Australia.
Freud’s Last Session was mostly praised by critics upon its US premiere last year, with Variety saying: “So many movies are either mindless or completely disinterested with engaging the intellect of their audiences that Freud’s Last Session offers a welcome bit of brain stimulation.”
“Just when you think you know everything Hopkins can do, he digs down and comes up with something new,” wrote Mick LaSalle at the San Francisco Chronicle.
We’ll let you know as soon it’s announced when Freud’s Last Session will be out in the UK and Ireland.
In the meantime, Anthony Hopkins’ wonderful movie One Life is still showing and is a must-see!
