‘Game of Thrones’ prequel ‘House of the Dragon’ reveals premiere date

It’s been announced when the new Game of Thrones spin-off will begin!

Based on George R. R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones.

HBO’s hit fantasy series launched in 2011 and ran for eight seasons, coming to a controversial end in 2019.

The upcoming prequel series started filming in the UK last spring.

House of the Dragon is co-created by George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal (Colony, Hercules).

It’ll tell the story of House Targaryen – the House that gave us the Mother of Dragons herself, Daenerys Targaryen – exploring the events leading to the ‘Dance of the Dragons’ civil war.

Leading the cast are Matt Smith (The Crown), Paddy Considine (Peaky Blinders), and Olivia Cooke (Vanity Fair).

They’re joined by Rhys Ifans (Notting Hill), Steve Toussaint (It’s a Sin), Eve Best (The King’s Speech), and Sonoya Mizuno (La La Land).

Former Doctor Who star Matt Smith commented back in 2020: “I think it’ll be a really exciting cast, I think it’s a wonderful legacy to be part of and it’s a great part. And without saying too much, I’m just sort of looking forward to riding a few dragons… if I get to.”

A one-minute teaser for House of the Dragon was unveiled by HBO last October and you can take a look here if you missed it:

We can now officially reveal the premiere date for the series!

HBO has confirmed that House of the Dragon will premiere in the US on HBO and HBO Max on Sunday 21st August.

It’ll be broadcast simultaneously in the UK on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV very late on Sunday night, with a repeat airing at a more respectable hour in the evening of Monday 22nd August.

The official synopsis reads:”The prequel series finds the Targaryen dynasty at the absolute apex of its power, with more than 15 dragons under their yoke.

“Most empires-real and imagined-crumble from such heights. In the case of the Targaryens, their slow fall begins almost 193 years before the events of Game of Thrones, when King Viserys Targaryen breaks with a century of tradition by naming his daughter Rhaenyra heir to the Iron Throne.

“But when Viserys later fathers a son, the court is shocked when Rhaenyra retains her status as his heir, and seeds of division sow friction across the realm.”
