‘Grantchester’ confirms returning cast for Season 9: Who’s back?

The makers of Grantchester have announced which characters will return next season!

American viewers are currently enjoying the show’s eighth season on Sunday nights, as fans in the UK patiently wait to hear when the long-running crime drama is back here.

Meanwhile, the Grantchester team are already hard at work filming the show’s ninth season in England.

Tom Brittney revealed last week that, after five years playing Reverend Will Davenport, he’s decided to leave the series.

His final scenes will air when Season 9 premieres on PBS Masterpiece and ITV1 in 2024.

Geordie won’t be left to solve the local crimes on his own, however, as Rishi Nair (New Tricks, Whitstable Pearl) is joining the cast as new vicar Alphy Kotteram.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to be joining Grantchester,” the 32-year-old London-born actor said. “I’m really excited to get started and cannot wait for the Grantchester fans to meet Alphy and to see all that’s in store for him.”

Plenty of familiar faces are returning alongside Robson Green as Geordie to welcome the new vicar.

Reprising their roles in the ninth season will be original regulars Al Weaver as Leonard Finch, Tessa Peake-Jones as Mrs. C, and Kacey Ainsworth as Cathy Keating.

They’ll be joined by Oliver Dimsdale as Daniel Marlowe, Nick Brimble as Jack Chapman, Bradley Hall as DC Larry Peters, and Melissa Johns as Miss Scott.

Ghosts star Charlotte Ritchie will also be back as Will’s wife Bonnie too.

We expect her character will exit at the same time as husband Will though.

“I’ve had the most incredible time playing Will Davenport for the last five years,” reflected Tom Brittney.

“I got to solve crimes with my best friend, and work with the best cast and crew I could ever ask for,” he said. “I’ll miss it more than anything.”

Hopefully he can reunite with his former co-star in the second season of Robson Green’s Weekend Escapes!
