‘Miss Scarlet and the Duke’ preview: 1800s London detective drama is coming to PBS

New Masterpiece Mystery series Miss Scarlet and The Duke premieres in the US this weekend!

The six-part period crime drama has been created by Grantchester writer Rachael New.

Miss Scarlet and The Duke stars English actress Kate Phillips (Wolf HallThe Crown) as Eliza Scarlet, the first ever female detective in 1800s London.

The show launched in the UK last March and American audiences can finally watch it on Sunday nights from 17th January at 8/7c on PBS Masterpiece.

The official synopsis reads: “When [Eliza Scarlet’s] father dies, he leaves her penniless in a time where marriage is her only option for financial security. But the headstrong Eliza is determined to find another way and tales over his private detective agency.

“To operate in this man’s world, she needs a partner, Detective Inspector William Wellington of Scotland Yard, who is also known as The Duke, a drinker, gambler and womanizer. Eliza and Duke strike up a mismatched, fiery relationship and team up to solve crime in 1880s London.”

The cast also includes Stuart Martin (Jamestown) as Detective Inspector William “The Duke” Wellington and Kevin Doyle (Downton Abbey) as Eliza’s father, alongside Ansu Kabia (World on Fire) and Andrew Gower (Carnival Row).

The sixth season of Grantchester began filming in England last autumn and will air on PBS later this year.
