New Natalie Portman series ‘Lady in the Lake’ set to premiere on Apple TV
A new seven-episode limited series, which is based on the novel of the same name by Laura Lippman, is arriving soon on Apple TV, with the first two episodes available as of July 19, 2024. The novel was inspired by two unrelated murders that took place during Lippman’s childhood in Baltimore.
What is it about?
Baltimore, 1966. “Lady in the Lake” is a mystery-drama starring Natalie Portman as Maddie Schwarz, a Jewish housewife with a mysterious past, who abandons her marriage and suburban life to become an investigative journalist. In the same city, Cleo Johnson, a working class Black mother, struggles to provide for her family whilst also navigating the delicate political situation in the Black community. Their lives converge when Cleo is murdered and Maddie becomes obsessed with solving the mystery. The series deals with the topics of racism and misogyny in a decade of tumultuous change.

Who is in the cast?
Natalie Portman (Black Swan) and Moses Ingram (The Queen’s Gambit) play the roles of Maddie and Cleo. The cast also includes Y’lan Noel (The Purge), Brett Gelman (Fleabag), Noah Jupe (The Night Manager), Josiah Cross (King Richard), Mikey Madison (Better Things), Pruitt Taylor Vince (Bird Box) and Dylan Arnold (Halloween).

“Lady in the Lake” was created and directed by Alma Har’el.
Hailing from Fifth Season, it was produced by Crazyrose and Bad Wolf America. Filming took place in Baltimore and started in April, 2022.
