‘Penny Dreadful’ is back with new spin-off set in 1930s – watch the trailer!

The first trailer has been released for the upcoming Penny Dreadful revival.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels is a follow-up to Showtime’s original horror period drama series, which aired between 2014 and 2016.

Set in Victorian London, Penny Dreadful featured a number of characters from 19th-century Gothic fiction, including Dorian Gray, Van Helsing, Count Dracula, Victor Frankenstein and his monster, and Dr. Henry Jekyll.

Rather than a direct continuation, however, the new spin-off series is described as “a spiritual descendant of the original Penny Dreadful story” and introduces a brand new set of characters.

The cast includes Natalie Dormer (Game of Thrones) as a “shape-shifting hell queen” called Magda, alongside Nathan Lane (Modern Family) and Brent Spiner (Star Trek: The Next Generation).

Rory Kinnear (Skyfall), who played Frankenstein’s creation The Creature in the original series, is also back – but playing a different character.

The official synopsis reads: “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels opens in 1938 Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with social and political tension.

“When a grisly murder shocks the city, Detective Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) and his partner Lewis Michener (Nathan Lane) become embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles: from the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore, to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism.

“Before long, Tiago and his family are grappling with powerful forces that threaten to tear them apart.”

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels premieres in the US on Sunday 26th April on Showtime and it’s expected to air in the UK on Sky Atlantic shortly after.
