UK start date confirmed for ‘Penny Dreadful: City of Angels’

Sky Atlantic has announced when the new Penny Dreadful spin-off begins in the UK.

Set in America in the late 1930s, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels is a follow-up to Showtime’s horror period drama series.

The original Penny Dreadful aired between 2014 and 2016, featuring a number of characters from 19th-century Gothic fiction.

Rather than a direct continuation set in Victorian London, however, the new spin-off series is described as “a spiritual descendant of the original Penny Dreadful story” and introduces a brand new set of characters.

The cast includes Natalie Dormer (Game of Thrones) as a “shape-shifting hell queen” called Magda, alongside Nathan Lane (Modern Family), Rory Kinnear (Skyfall), and Brent Spiner (Star Trek: The Next Generation).

Penny Dreadful: City Of Angels will air at 9pm on Wednesday nights in the UK from 1st July on Sky Atlantic.

The series premiered in the US on Showtime in April.

The official synopsis reads: “City of Angels is set in 1938 Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with Mexican-American folklore and social tension.

“Rooted in the conflict between characters connected to the deity Santa Muerte and others allied with the Devil, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels will explore an exciting mix of the supernatural and the combustible reality of that period, creating new occult myths and moral dilemmas within a genuine historical backdrop.

“When a grisly murder shocks the city, Detective Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) and his partner Lewis Michener (Nathan Lane) become embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles: from the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore, to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism.

“Before long, Tiago and his family are grappling with powerful forces that threaten to tear them apart.”
