Netflix confirms release date for new version of Jane Austen’s ‘Persuasion’

It’s been announced when Netflix’s upcoming Persuasion movie will premiere!

We’ve also got some brand new official promotional photos to share too.

First announced a year ago, the film is based on Jane Austen’s final completed novel, which was published six months after Austen died in 1817.

Netflix says the adaptation is “a modern, witty approach to a beloved story,” but we’re reassured that it’ll still remain “true to Jane Austen’s classic novel.”

Heading the cast as Anne Elliot is American actress Dakota Johnson.

Recently seen in Netflix’s Oscar-nominated movie The Lost Daughter, the 32-year-old star is best known for her role as Anastasia Steele in the Fifty Shades franchise.

She’ll will be joined by 35-year-old British-Malaysian actor Henry Golding as Mr Elliot.

Golding shot to fame as the romantic lead in 2018’s Crazy Rich Asians.

The cast also includes Cosmo Jarvis (Lady Macbeth) as Captain Frederick Wentworth, alongside Suki Waterhouse (The White Princess), Richard E. Grant (Withnail & I), Nikki Amuka-Bird (Luther), and Ben Bailey Smith (Law & Order UK).

Izuka Hoyle, Mia McKenna-Bruce, Nia Towle, Edward Bluemel, Lydia Rose Bewley, and Yolanda Kettle will appear too.

We can now confirm that Persuasion will premiere exclusively on Netflix around the world on Friday 15th July.

The official synopsis reads: “Living with her snobby family on the brink of bankruptcy, Anne Elliot is an unconforming woman with modern sensibilities.

“When Frederick Wentworth—the dashing one she once sent away—crashes back into her life, Anne must choose between putting the past behind her or listening to her heart when it comes to second chances.”

Persuasion is the movie directorial debut of acclaimed theatre director Carrie Cracknell (Sea Wall/A Life on Broadway), with a script by Alice Victoria Winslow and Rain Man screenwriter Ron Bass.

There’s another adaptation of Persuasion on the way too, featuring Sarah Snook (Succession) as Anne Elliot.

It’s hard to believe that it’s already 15 years since ITV’s Persuasion mini-series, which starred Rupert Penry-Jones (Whitechapel) and Sally Hawkins (Paddington).
