‘Spartacus’ is getting a follow-up series called ‘House of Ashur’

Starz has given the green light to a Spartacus sequel series!

The action drama was a hit for the network last decade, running for four seasons between 2010 and 2013.

Inspired by the historical figure of Spartacus, a Thracian gladiator who led a major slave uprising against the Roman Republic from 73 to 71 BCE, the show was created by American writer Steven S. DeKnight (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Daredevil).

The new follow-up series will see DeKnight return to write and executive produce the project.

“To be afforded the opportunity to return a decade later to a series you loved is such a rare, wonderful opportunity,” he commented. “I could not be more excited to craft this next chapter in the Spartacus saga.”

“Together we are crafting something truly unique and unusual for the next chapter in this epic story,” DeKnight has teased.

Titled Spartacus: House of Ashur, it’ll feature the return of actor Nick Tarabay as Ashur!

We’re told that the new show be “a history-bending, erotic, thrilling, roller-coaster experience that builds on everything that made the original series a colossal hit.”

The official logline reads: “In the aftermath of the defeat of Spartacus and his rebel army, the drama will depict a new tale of treachery, deceit, and blood unfolding beneath the foreboding shadow of Rome.”

Spartacus featured many familiar faces from the UK, Australia and New Zealand during its original run, including John Hannah (Sliding Doors), Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess), Jaime Murray (Hustle), and the late Andy Whitfield.

Spartacus: House of Ashur will imagine what might have happened if Ashur hadn’t died on Mount Vesuvius at the end of Spartacus: Vengeance.

Starz’s President of Original Programming, Kathryn Busby has promised “more enthralling, high-octane drama” in the upcoming sequel.

“It is an honor to team up with Steven again as he expands upon the storytelling within this thrilling, action-packed universe,” she added.

A follow-up series for Spartacus was first rumoured at the start of 2023 so it’s very exciting to have confirmation that this is going ahead.

Spartacus: House of Ashur is expected to premiere on Starz in early 2025.

The complete original Spartacus box set is available on DVD on Amazon.
