‘The Crown’ producer wants Meghan Markle to play herself in the series

We think we can safely say that this will never happen, but a producer of The Crown is keen for Meghan Markle to play herself in the Netflix drama.

The award-winning period drama tells the story of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom.

The next season of The Crown begins filming in July, with Broadchurch star Olivia Colman replacing Claire Foy as the Queen.

Discussing the show’s evolving cast as the story moves into the Camilla Parker Bowles years and introduces a young Princess Diana, producer Suzanne Mackie told a panel at the INTV Conference in Jerusalem: “Those are going to be extraordinary, those episodes.”

She also confirmed that future seasons may feature appearances from modern-day faces: “I want to see an episode where Trump comes to Buckingham Palace.”

As for who could play Prince Harry’s soon-to-be wife Meghan Markle, best known to US audiences for her role as Rachel Zane in seven seasons of legal drama series Suits, Mackie said: “She can play herself.”

However, the former American actress announced her retirement from acting in 2017, choosing instead to focus on her humanitarian work.

The third season of The Crown is expected to premiere on Netflix in early 2019.
