‘The Great’ reveals Season 3 release date and trailer
Hulu has announced when the third season of The Great begins!
From the creator of Olivia Colman’s The Favourite, the comedy-drama series debuted three years ago in May 2020.
The Great takes a satirical look at the rise of Catherine the Great, from outsider to the longest reigning female ruler in Russia’s history.
Very loosely based on “the occasional historical fact,” the Emmy Award-winning series stars Elle Fanning (Ginger & Rosa) as Empress Catherine II and Nicholas Hoult (A Single Man) as Emperor Peter III.
The show is shot around the UK and locations have included York, Lincolnshire, and Kent, with key scenes shot at Hatfield House in Hertfordshire, Belvoir Castle in Leicestershire, and Hampton Court Palace.

Alongside Fanning and Hoult, the series also stars Phoebe Fox (The Hollow Crown), Adam Godley (Nanny McPhee), Gwilym Lee (Midsomer Murders), Charity Wakefield (Wolf Hall), Douglas Hodge (Penny Dreadful), Sacha Dhawan (Doctor Who), Sebastian de Souza (The Borgias), Bayo Gbadamosi, and Belinda Bromilow.
When’s the release date?
Season 3 will premiere in the US exclusively on Hulu on Friday 12th May.
All ten episodes will be streaming from the launch date.
We’re not yet quite sure who’ll be showing The Great in the UK this time around.
Previous seasons have aired around a month after their American premiere on StarzPlay UK (now known as Lionsgate+ over here), and then later on Channel 4.
A brand new poster has also been unveiled, with the brilliant tagline ‘Chaos reigns.’
The official synopsis for The Great describes the show as “a very modern story about the past which encompasses the many roles [Catherine the Great] played over her lifetime as lover, teacher, ruler, friend, and fighter.”
We’re told to expect “a fictionalized, fun and anachronistic story of an idealistic, romantic young girl, who arrives in Russia for an arranged marriage to the mercurial Emperor Peter.
“Hoping for love and sunshine, she finds instead a dangerous, depraved, backward world that she resolves to change. All she has to do is kill her husband, beat the church, baffle the military and get the court onside.”
The Great is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
