‘The Singapore Grip’ air date confirmed: When is new World War 2 drama on TV?
ITV has announced when its new adaptation of The Singapore Grip will begin.
Oscar winning screenwriter and playwright Christopher Hampton (Atonement, Dangerous Liaisons) has adapted J.G. Farrell’s classic novel for television.
From the makers of Poldark, the new six-part mini-series is set during the Second World War and follows a British family living in Singapore at the time of the Japanese invasion.
The Singapore Grip began filming in South East Asia in early 2019, with Luke Treadaway (Ordeal By Innocence) leading the cast as “reluctant hero” Matthew Webb.
The cast also includes David Morrissey (Britannia), Jane Horrocks (Absolutely Fabulous), Colm Meaney (Star Trek: The Next Generation), Luke Newberry (In The Flesh), Bart Edwards (Peep Show), Elizabeth Tan (Coronation Street), Christophe Guybet (Falco), and Charles Dance (Game of Thrones).
The Singapore Grip will air in the UK at 9pm on Sunday nights this autumn on ITV from 13th September.
A broadcaster in the US hasn’t yet been announced.

The official synopsis reads: “Singapore, 1941. Rubber merchant Walter Blackett, his wife Sylvia, ruthless daughter Joan and spoilt son Monty live a life of luxury, seemingly untouched by the troubles in Europe.
“With Walter’s business partner Mr Webb’s health failing, Walter needs to ensure that the future of their firm is secure. He decides that Webb’s son Matthew is the perfect match for Joan, and Joan is happy to agree, but Matthew’s idealism leaves Walter increasingly suspicious as Matthew himself falls under the spell of Vera Chiang, a mysterious Chinese refugee…”
1978’s The Singapore Grip is the third of Farrell’s Empire Trilogy of novels dealing with different facets of colonial rule, following Troubles (1970) and The Siege of Krishnapur (1973).
