Andrew Garfield is back on the big screen, this time in medieval England, in The Uprising, a new historical epic from United 93 and Captain Phillips director Paul Greengrass.
The Uprising opened in cinemas across the United States on 11 September 2026, and is distributed by Focus Features. The film is being relased in the US several weeks ahead of the UK and Ireland, currently scheduled for 9 October.
The Uprising is set against the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381,and takes viewers into one of the most dramatic popular rebellions in medieval English history.
What is The Uprising about?
Garfield plays a character known simply as the Ploughman, a farmer who is drawn into the growing revolt against the government of the young King Richard II.
England has been devastated by plague and war, while ordinary people face heavy taxation and a rigid social system. Anger develops, and soon thousands of rebels march towards London demanding change.
The story includes fictional characters with figures who played important roles in the real uprising, including the rebel leader Wat Tyler and radical priest John Ball.
Greengrass has created the story as a historical action drama, with the rebellion and its violent confrontation with royal authority at the main focus of the film.
