BritBox announces Charles and Diana’s wedding 40th anniversary documentary

A brand new documentary will mark the 40th anniversary of Charles and Diana’s wedding next month.

Premiering exclusively on BritBox, The Wedding of the Century features beautifully restored high-definition footage of the 1981 ceremony.

The footage used here was shot on 35mm film rather than the decade’s poor quality standard video tape, which luckily means that it can now be upgraded to today’s crisp 4k resolution.

For the first time, we can now watch a clearer version of the ceremony than ever before, seeing “every detail down to the creases in Diana’s iconic gown as she steps out of the royal carriage.”

A record 750 million people in 74 countries originally watched Lady Diana Spencer and Prince Charles exchange vows at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London on 29th July 1981.

The feature-length film also includes exclusive interviews with those who worked behind the scenes.

Amongst the interviewees are chief royal florist David Longman, who met with Diana to create a bouquet fit for a princess; musical director Barry Rose, who conducted the choir inside St. Paul’s Cathedral; Royal Navy head baker Dave Avery, who met with Diana before spending 14 weeks creating the wedding cake; and royal photographer Kent Gavin, who captured the ceremony inside St. Paul’s and whom Diana later chose to photograph Prince William’s christening.

John Osborne from Touchdown Films commented: “We are delighted to be working with BritBox on this new feature-length documentary that reframes one of the most iconic days in history like never before.”

The Wedding of the Century will premiere on BritBox in the UK on Thursday 15th July.

The documentary will premiere on BritBox in the US and Canada on Thursday 29th July, exactly forty years after the wedding took place.

It was recently confirmed that The Hour actor Dominic West will be the latest actor to portray Prince Charles in The Crown.

Taking over from The Durrells star Josh O’Connor, he’ll be joined by Elizabeth Debicki (The Night Manager) as the new Princess Diana.

The fifth season of Netflix’s royal drama is set to begin filming in England very soon.

The Crown is available on DVD on Amazon.
