John Malkovich, Sean Bean and Miranda Richardson lead an impressive cast in The Yellow Tie, a new historical drama coming to UK cinemas on 9 October 2026.
The biographical film tells the remarkable true story of Romanian conductor Sergiu Celibidache, one of the most distinctive figures in 20th-century classical music.
Ben Schnetzer (Pride) plays Celibidache as a younger man, while John Malkovich portrays him later in life. Sean Bean (Game of Thrones) stars as Sergiu’s formidable father Demostene, with Kate Phillips (Wolf Hall, Peaky Blinders) and Miranda Richardson (The Young Victoria, Blackadder) playing Ioana Celibidache at different stages of her life.

What is The Yellow Tie about?
The story begins with Celibidache’s childhood in Romania, and follows a young man who grew up under the strict authority of his father while developing an extraordinary passion for music.
Determined to forge his own path, Sergiu eventually makes his way to Berlin, where he works to establish himself as a conductor. His ambitions are threatened by the outbreak of the Second World War, however, and he is left struggling to survive in the midst of hunger and the dangers of wartime Germany.
As his career develops, Celibidache’s uncompromising pursuit of musical perfection brings its own challenges, and impacts both his personal relationships and the legacy he is determined to create.
The story has a particularly personal connection to the film’s creator. The Yellow Tie is directed and co-written by Serge Ioan Celebidachi, Celibidache’s son, alongside co-writer and producer James Olivier. Adela Vrinceanu Celebidachi and Cristina Dobritoiu also produce, while Peter Menzies Jr. serves as cinematographer.
