‘Line of Duty’ star Vicky McClure explores ‘My Grandad’s War’ in new WW2 doc
ITV has confirmed when Vicky McClure‘s new World War II documentary will air.
Best known for her role as Detective Inspector Kate Fleming in the BBC’s hit police thriller Line of Duty, she’s also been in Shane Meadows’ This is England series and Broadchurch.
The 40-year-old English actress returns to our screens next week in Vicky McClure: My Grandad’s War.
The one-off ITV1 documentary sees McClure embark on an emotional trip with her 97-year-old grandfather, Ralph, learning about his role in the most extraordinary single day of the Second World War – D-Day.
The Trigger Point star is keen to understand how a young lad from Nottingham found himself in the Royal Navy and at the centre of a world-changing battle on the Normandy beaches on 6 June 1944, nearly 80 years ago.
“After learning about Ralph’s early life, they head to Portsmouth where Ralph shows his granddaughter the ropes aboard one of the last remaining WWII landing craft,” the official synopsis tells us. “Finally, Ralph takes Vicky back to Normandy, to the beach he last visited almost 80 years ago on D-Day.”
When’s the release date?
Vicky McClure: My Grandad’s War airs in the UK at 9pm on Monday 5 June on ITV1, and it’ll be available to catch up on ITVX.
There’s no news of a US broadcaster, but we expect this may end up on BritBox.
We’re told that the programme will provide viewers with “an opportunity to see Vicky as she celebrates her ‘legend’ of a grandad and pays tribute to the heroes who never came home.”
“This has completely floored me,” McClure says after hearing Ralph open up about his wartime experiences. “Everyone that sees him with his medals on wants to meet him and shake his hand. Everyone who has approached him has got emotional and they don’t know him. There are not many people left to thank.
“To hear about D-Day from my grandad, who was there, means an awful lot to me,” she added.
Vicky McClure led the cast of ratings smash Trigger Point last year, and fans will be pleased to hear that ITV has ordered a second season of the bomb disposal thriller series!
If you missed it, Trigger Point is currently streaming on ITVX in the UK, along with McClure’s recent four-part drama Without Sin.
Line of Duty is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
