‘Vienna Blood’ future confirmed: Will there be a Season 3?
It’s been announced that Vienna Blood will be back for a third season.
Set in 1900s Austria, the hit period crime drama is based on the best-selling Liebermann novels by Frank Tallis.
Adapted by Sherlock writer Steve Thompson, the series premiered in 2019.
Vienna Blood aired its second season in the UK in December 2021, comprising another three feature-length mysteries: ‘The Melancholy Countess’, ‘The Devil’s Kiss’, and ‘Darkness Rising’.
The show returned on US screens last month as part of PBS’s Masterpiece line-up on Sunday nights.
Austrian broadcaster ORF and Germany’s ZDF have now confirmed that Vienna Blood has been renewed for Season 3!
Producer Jez Swimer commented: “Vienna Blood’s fabulous combination of mystery, crime, the odd couple pairing of Matthew Beard’s psychiatrist Max Liebermann and Juergen Maurer’s Inspector Rheinhardt, and sumptuous 1907 Vienna has captivated viewers around the world.”
He added: “We are excited to deliver a new series of compelling stories to its growing global fan base.”
Co-producers Oliver Auspitz and Andreas Kamm also said: “We are delighted that we will soon start shooting our third season of Vienna Blood, thanks to the trust and the support of commissioning broadcasters ORF and ZDF, and all our other funding partners, including Red Arrow Studios International, BBC Two and PBS.”
They added: “Steve Thompson has written three great new scripts and we are looking forward to continuing to meet the high expectations of our growing audience worldwide.”
Three brand new 90-minute instalments will begin filming in Austria next month, with Robert Dornhelm (Anne Frank: The Whole Story) directing the new episodes.
Dornhelm also helmed the previous two seasons, so he understands the show in and out by now.
Matthew Beard (The Imitation Game) and Austrian actor Juergen Maurer will both reprise their roles as brilliant young English doctor Max Liebermann and Detective Inspector Oskar Rheinhardt.
We can’t wait to see how Max gets out of the romantic tangle he’d found himself in at the end of the second season!
Season 3 is expected to air in the UK later this year on BBC Two, then in the US in early 2023 on PBS.
UK viewers can watch both seasons right now on BBC iPlayer.
