Will 1970s-set ‘Prime Suspect’ prequel be back for a second season?

ITV has announced the fate of detective series Prime Suspect 1973.

The period crime drama debuted on ITV in March and was a prequel to the long-running Prime Suspect, which starred Helen Mirren as DCI Jane Tennison.

Set in Hackney in 1973, the six-part series was led by newcomer Stefanie Martini, playing a 22 year-old Jane Tennison as she began her career as a WPC with the Metropolitan Police Service.

Prime Suspect 1973 was adapted from Prime Suspect creator Lynda La Plante’s novel Tennison.

ITV has now sadly confirmed there won’t be a second season of Prime Suspect 1973, despite strong ratings and mostly positive reviews.

An ITV spokesperson revealed: “We are grateful to Lynda La Plante for allowing us to adapt her brilliant book Tennison, and we were very happy with how Prime Suspect 1973 performed and the audience reaction to the series. However, not every series can be recommissioned.”
