Netflix’s The Doll begins in Warsaw, where two very different worlds are about to collide. Izabela Łęcka belongs to the aristocracy, but her family’s elegant lifestyle is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain. Stanisław Wokulski, meanwhile, is a merchant returning from war with a newly acquired fortune and one overriding ambition: Izabela.

Izabela wants a life of her own

Izabela’s household is already economising. The family hire a young woman named Marianna cheaply as her new maid, while Izabela discovers just how precarious her own position has become. She is determined not to follow the conventional path expected of an aristocratic woman. She wants to write and eventually establish her own magazine, and visits The Ivy hoping to have her work published. The reception is brutal: privilege has left her knowing too little about ordinary life to write convincingly. Instead, the editor encourages her to travel to Paris and report on the forthcoming world exhibition. That plan is threatened when her father, Tomasz, admits that he has invested virtually everything – including Izabela’s dowry.

Wokulski returns a rich man

Ignacy Rzecki eagerly awaits the return of his friend and employer, Stanisław Wokulski. Wokulski left with 30,000 roubles and has returned with 300,000 after making money from the Russo-Turkish War. But wealth alone isn’t what interests him. He is obsessed with Izabela. Wokulski rents rooms from which he can observe the Łęcki residence and begins looking for a route into aristocratic society. He discovers that the family owes money to his shop. His attempt to persuade members of the Polish nobility to invest with him exposes the gulf between old status and new money. Marianna’s employment in the Łęcki household is no accident: she has been recruited to report to him about Izabela.

Wokulski finally meets Izabela

Their worlds finally meet at a society ball. Izabela initially regards Wokulski as little more than an uncultivated merchant. He cannot dance and appears uncomfortable among the aristocracy, but she nevertheless takes his hand and begins teaching him. The evening takes a dramatic turn after a confrontation erupts and a gun is fired. The shock sends the heavily pregnant Stasia into premature labour. Doctor Zofia Dobska takes charge as Stasia begins haemorrhaging. The ballroom becomes an improvised delivery room, and after a dangerous labour, a baby girl is born.
