Netflix’s The Doll opens in 1879 Warsaw with a bomb exploding in Stanisław Wokulski’s department store, framed by the narration of his loyal manager, Ignacy Rzecki, who wonders whether Wokulski and the aristocratic Izabela Łęcka ever truly loved one another or were doomed by class and obsession. The story then rewinds to show how these two very different people, a cash‑poor noblewoman, and a self‑made merchant hell‑bent on entering high society, first collide.

Izabela wants to become a writer

Izabela is intelligent, ambitious and frustrated by the life expected of her. Her family wants her to marry a suitable man, but Izabela has other plans.

She wants to write and become involved in running the magazine The Ivy.

Izabela’s cousin Florentyna hires a young woman named Marianna to work as Izabela’s maid. Marianna comes from a very different world from the wealthy Łęcki household and is grateful for the opportunity.

Izabela approaches the famous Polish writer Eliza Orzeszkowa for advice. She hopes to prove that she has something useful to contribute, but Orzeszkowa bluntly tells her that she needs more experience of the real world.

She suggests that Izabela should travel, especially to Paris, if she wants to develop as a writer.

Izabela takes the advice seriously. The problem is money.

Her father, Tomasz Łęcki, has made a series of bad investments and much of the family’s fortune has disappeared. Even the money intended for Izabela’s dowry is at risk.

Izabela angrily confronts her father. She realises that the comfortable life she has always known may be coming to an end.

She also tries to take a more active role in the family’s affairs. When she visits the Society of Polish Nobility, the men do not take her seriously. Izabela refuses to be intimidated and pushes ahead with her plans.

Wokulski returns to Warsaw

Meanwhile, Stanisław Wokulski returns to Warsaw as a rich man.

He has made a fortune in Bulgaria through trade during the Russo-Turkish War. His old friend Ignacy Rzecki, who manages his store, is pleased to see him home.

Wokulski now has enough money to change his life. But wealth does not automatically bring social status. To Warsaw’s aristocrats, he is still a merchant.

Wokulski desperately wants to enter their world, and he is especially interested in Izabela.

The Łęcki family’s money problems give him an opportunity. Tomasz needs investment, while Wokulski has money and wants to get closer to his family.

Wokulski meets Izabela

Wokulski finally enters Izabela’s world at a society ball.

Some of the aristocrats look down on him because he made his money through business. However, his wealth also makes him difficult to ignore.

Izabela is cautious when she meets him. She soon understands, however, that Wokulski is very interested in her.

Their relationship begins with both of them wanting something.

Wokulski is attracted to Izabela and wants to become part of her social world. Izabela begins to realise that his money and interest in her could help her achieve some of her own goals.

With her father’s finances getting worse, Wokulski could be useful.

Stasia goes into premature labour

During the ball, a violent confrontation breaks out and a gun is fired. The shock sends the heavily pregnant Stasia into premature labour.

Her condition becomes serious, and Zofia has to perform an emergency caesarean in terrible conditions to save the baby.

Izabela witnesses what happens and is horrified. A baby girl is born.

For Izabela, the experience is very different from the protected aristocratic world she knows. It gives her a glimpse of how other women live and the dangers they face.

Disaster for the Łęcki family

There is more bad news for Izabela when a fire destroys her father’s construction site.

Tomasz is already in serious financial trouble, and the fire makes the situation even worse. It also threatens Izabela’s plans to travel to Paris.

Wokulski now becomes even more important. He suggests that Tomasz may still have assets that could be used in business and begins to place himself closer to the Łęcki family.

By the end of Episode 1, Wokulski and Izabela have entered each other’s lives.

Wokulski sees Izabela as the woman he wants and as a connection to the aristocratic society that has always excluded him.

Izabela sees that Wokulski’s money and his feelings for her could help her gain some of the independence she wants.

Their relationship has begun, but from the start, love, money and social status are closely connected.
