‘Black Narcissus’ recap: What happened in Episode 2?

The BBC’s new adaptation of Black Narcissus continued in the UK tonight.

Based on English author Rumer Godden’s 1939 literary novel, it tells an iconic tale of sexual repression and forbidden love.

The three-part mini-series stars Gemma Arterton (Their Finest) as Sister Clodagh, Diana Rigg (Victoria) as Mother Dorothea, Jim Broadbent (War and Peace) as Father Roberts, Gina McKee (Bodyguard) as Sister Adela, and Rosie Cavaliero (Gentleman Jack) as Sister Briony.

Sister Ruth’s health worsens as winter sets in, and the ghost of Princess Srimati plagues her as Angu Ayah tells her more of the princess’ tragic fate.

Dilip Rai’s arrival in search of education presents Clodagh with a dilemma, and she is forced to turn to Mr Dean for help.

As Clodagh struggles to keep control of the convent, Sister Philippa announces her desire to leave.

Forbidden feelings between Sister Clodagh, Sister Ruth and Mr Dean come to a head at Christmas, interrupted by the dramatic arrival of Sister Adela and Father Roberts.
