Netflix has unveiled an atmospheric first trailer for upcoming international drama 1899.
From the creators of Netflix’s award-winning German show Dark, the new mystery series began filming last summer.
1899 follows the mysterious circumstances on board an immigrant ship, the Kerberos, as it travels from Europe to New York at the end of the 19th century.
It’s described as “a visually stunning Odyssee where nothing is as it seems.”

Dark incredibly brought to life multiple time periods with its engaging (and increasingly complex) mystery, so we can’t wait to see what the team have created with 1899.
Writer, producer and showrunner Jantje Friese previous commented: “1899 is a truly European series with characters from various countries speaking in the language of their origin. We feel very fortunate to have found amazing talent from all over the world to venture into this exciting journey with us.”
The eight-part series was shot using a custom built virtual production stage near Berlin, Germany, similar to the effects stages used in the recent Star Wars television series.
1899 star Emily Beecham revealed: “It would be a totally different experience if we were doing this on green screen … [it’s like] you’re really looking at the sea!”

The official synopsis reads: “The passengers, all of different backgrounds and nationalities, are united by their hopes and dreams for a new century and their future abroad.
“When they discover a second ship adrift on the open sea that had gone missing for months, their journey takes an unexpected turn.
“What they find on board will turn their passage to the promised land into a nightmare-like riddle, connecting each of the passenger’s pasts through a web of secrets.”
1899 premieres exclusively on Netflix around the world later this year.
