Ewan McGregor begins filming ‘A Gentleman in Moscow’ series
The upcoming adaptation of A Gentleman in Moscow has started shooting!
All Creatures Great and Small writer Ben Vanstone is adapting the best-selling novel for television.
Written by Amor Towles (The Lincoln Highway, Rules of Civility), the hit 2016 book has sold over 4 million copies worldwide!
It was revealed last summer that Ewan McGregor will lead the cast as Count Alexander Rostov who, in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution, finds that his gilded past places him on the wrong side of history.
The makers of the limited series have now announced that the Moulin Rouge star will joined by Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Anna Urbanova.
The 38-year-old American actress is best known for her roles in Fargo, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and the later Die Hard movies.
Ewan McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead previously worked together in the DC comic book movie Birds of Prey in 2020.
Next up she’s starring in the new Star Wars television series Ahsoka.
In A Gentleman in Moscow, Winstead is playing Anna Urbanova, a glamorous, independent, and self-made film actress, at the height of her fame.
We’re told that Urbanova is “an enigmatic character, who keeps her cards very close to her chest.”
The official announcement adds: “Reluctant to reveal her true self, Anna plays a role off-screen as well as on. The Count and Anna’s sizzling chemistry is clear from the moment they meet in the Metropol Hotel where he has been banished by a Soviet trial, but will this be true love, or just the latest in a long line of roles Anna is playing?”
We expect more cast details to be revealed in the coming months.
The project certainly has an impressive line-up of talent involved behind the scenes, with the executive producers including author Amor Towles, Mrs Harris Goes to Paris producer Xavier Marchand, War & Peace director Tom Harper, and star Ewan McGregor himself.
McGregor previously commented: “It’s an amazing, wonderful story and I am very excited to get to play such a fabulous role.”
The official synopsis reads: “Spared immediate execution, Count Alexander Rostov is banished by a Soviet tribunal to an attic room in the opulent Hotel Metropol, threatened with death if he ever sets foot outside again.
“As the years pass and some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history unfold outside the hotel’s doors, Rostov’s reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery. As he builds a new life within the walls of the hotel, he discovers the true value of friendship, family and love.”
BAFTA award winning Luther director Sam Miller is directing the series.
With filming now underway, A Gentleman in Moscow is set to premiere later in 2023 or in early 2024 on Showtime in the US.
It’ll be streaming on Paramount+ in the UK and internationally.
