‘A Town Called Malice’ first look: 1980s crime thriller series reveals trailer

Sky has unveiled the first trailer for A Town Called Malice.

Described as an “intoxicating cocktail of crime thriller and family saga in the early ’80s,” the upcoming eight-part drama is written by Bulletproof creator Nick Love.

A Town Called Malice follows the Lords – a family of former South London gangsters who’ve fallen to the bottom of the criminal food chain – and they’re not happy about it.

When they flee to the Costa del Sol in Spain following a gangland battle, the Lords realise this is a golden opportunity to re-invent themselves and re-capture their former glory. However, they spend as much time battling each other as they do their opponents.

Filming on the series began in London and Spain back in 2021, with a great cast involved.

Jason Flemyng (Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels) heads up the family as Albert Lord, alongside Jack Rowan (Born to Kill) as Gene Lord, Tahirah Sharif (The Haunting of Bly Manor) as Cindy Carter, Gene’s girlfriend, and Martha Plimpton (The Good Wife) as Mint Ma.

They’ll be joined by Dougray Scott (Desperate Housewives) as Uncle Tony, Lex Shrapnel (Captain America) as Leonard Lord, Daniel Sharman (Medici) as Kelly Lord, George Jaques (The Third Day: Autumn) as Anthony Lord, and Eliza Butterworth (The Last Kingdom) as Carly Lord.

Gabriel Silver, Director of Commissioning, Drama, Sky Studios, previously commented: “If Dallas and Pulp Fiction created a love child to the strains of Duran Duran, it would be A Town Called Malice — an intoxicating cocktail of ‘80s romance, avarice and violence, served up with pineapple chunks and an umbrella…”

Filled with “romance, obsession, violence, deceit, and swagger,” A Town Called Malice will premiere in 2023 on Sky Max and NOW TV in the UK.

There’s no news yet on where the show will be airing internationally, but Sky have a close relationship with HBO, so it could end up streaming on HBO Max in the US.

If you’re a fan of British crime dramas set in the 1980s, you’re certainly in luck this year, as we’ve also got BBC One’s new heist drama The Gold and a second season of Channel 4’s The Curse coming up!
