‘Angela Black’ preview: First look at ‘Downton’ star’s new TV thriller

The first photos have been unveiled for Joanne Froggatt’s new psychological drama.

Described as a “dark, Hitchcockian thriller,” Angela Black comes from the creators of The Missing and Liar.

The cast is led by Golden Globe winner Joanne Froggatt, best known for playing Anna Bates in all six season of Downton Abbey.

She’s playing the titular Angela, a suburban housewife whose seemingly perfect life isn’t all it appears to be.

Froggatt is joined by Game of Thrones actor Michiel Huisman as Angela’s husband, and Samuel Adewunmi (The Hatton Garden Job) as an enigmatic stranger.

Angela Black began filming in London last November, and will premiere in the UK this autumn on ITV.

A broadcaster in the US hasn’t yet been announced.

The official synopsis reads: “Angela Black’s life appears idyllic: a house in suburban London, days working volunteer shifts at a dogs home, two beautiful sons and a charming, hard-working husband – Olivier. However, beneath this façade of charmed domesticity, Angela, played by Joanne Froggatt, is a victim of domestic violence.

“Olivier (Michiel Huisman) is controlling and brutal; but Angela loves him and he’s the father of her children. She can’t leave him, even though she has threatened to countless times.

“So she covers her bruises with make-up and fabricates lies to explain away her missing teeth. Until, one day, Angela is approached by Ed (Samuel Adewunmi) a Private Investigator, and he smashes her already strained domestic life to pieces.

“Ed reveals Olivier’s deepest secrets to Angela, and she is faced with horrifying truths about her husband and his betrayals. But can Angela trust Ed? And what truths from Angela’s past life will be revealed in the ferocious fight between her and her husband?

“With one encounter, Angela’s life switches from school runs and the dogs home to private detectives and buried secrets.

Angela Black is a Hitchcockian thriller that follows one woman as she risks everything she holds dear to fight back against the man who has suppressed and tormented her for most of her adult life.”

A sequel to 2019’s hit Downton movie is shooting in England right now, although its release date has been delayed.

However, Joanne Froggatt has confirmed that she’ll definitely be back as Anna!

Angela Black is written by Emmy and Golden Globe-winning screenwriters Harry and Jack Williams.

The writing duo recently returned to BBC One with a second season of Baptiste, which will air in the US later this year on PBS.
