Dan Stevens and Judi Dench star in ‘Blithe Spirit’ movie – watch the trailer!

The new adaptation of Blithe Spirit has had its release pushed back again.

Described as “a riotous reimagining of Noël Coward’s classic comedy,” the upcoming British movie is based on the 1941 play of the same name.

The cast is led by Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey) and Judi Dench (Skyfall), alongside Emilia Fox (Silent Witness), Isla Fisher (The Great Gatsby) and Leslie Mann (Knocked Up).

Director Edward Hall has previously helmed episodes of Downton Abbey, The Durrells and Partners in Crime.

The official synopsis reads: “Best-selling crime novelist Charles (Dan Stevens) is struggling with catastrophic writer’s block and a stressful deadline for his first screenplay. His picture-perfect second wife Ruth (Isla Fisher) is doing her best to keep him focussed in the hope of fulfilling her dream of heading to Hollywood.

“Charles’ desperate search for inspiration leads him to invite Madame Arcati (Judi Dench), a medium recently exposed as a fraud, to perform a séance in their home.

“They all get more than they bargained for when Arcati accidentally summons the spirit of his deceased first wife: the fiery and jealous Elvira (Leslie Mann) who embarks on a mission to kill Charles so she can spend eternity with him which leads to an increasingly comical and deadly love triangle.”

Blithe Spirit was originally set to arrive in UK cinemas back in May, but due to the coronavirus pandemic the movie was postponed until September.

It’ll now be released in the UK on Friday 25th December and in the US in early 2021.

Dan Stevens is best known for his role as Matthew Crawley in the first three seasons of Downton Abbey.
