‘The Crown’ pics gallery: First look at Margaret Thatcher and Charles & Diana
Netflix has unveiled a set of new photos from The Crown‘s fourth season.
The award-winning period drama series about the reign of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom is returning to our screens in November.
Filming on the ten new episodes was finished off just in time before the TV and film industry shut down almost all productions due to the coronavirus pandemic this spring.
Olivia Colman (Broadchurch) and Tobias Menzies (Outlander) are back as the Queen and Prince Philip in the new season of The Crown next month.
Helena Bonham Carter (The King’s Speech) is also reprising her role as Princess Margaret.
The 54-year-old actress took over the part from Vanessa Kirby in last year’s Season 3.
They’ll be joined by The X-Files star Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher.
Stephen Boxer (The Iron Lady) is playing the former Conservative Prime Minister’s husband, Denis.
Josh O’Connor is returning as Prince Charles, alongside newcomer Emma Corrin as a young Princess Diana.
Period drama fans may recognise Corrin from Grantchester, while O’Connor is best known for his role as Larry in The Durrells.
Corrin previously commented: “I have been glued to the show since the first episode and to think I’m now joining this incredibly talented acting family is just surreal.”
She added: “Princess Diana was an icon, and her effect on the world remains profound and inspiring. To be given the chance to explore her through Peter Morgan’s writing is the most exceptional opportunity, and I will strive to do her justice!”
Season 4 will premiere exclusively on Netflix worldwide on Sunday 15th November.
The official synopsis reads: “As the 1970s are drawing to a close, Queen Elizabeth (Olivia Colman) and her family find themselves preoccupied with safeguarding the line of succession by securing an appropriate bride for Prince Charles (Josh O’Connor), who is still unmarried at 30.”
“As the nation begins to feel the impact of divisive policies introduced by Britain’s first female Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher (Gillian Anderson), tensions arise between her and the Queen which only grow worse as Thatcher leads the country into the Falklands War, generating conflict within the Commonwealth.
“While Charles’ romance with a young Lady Diana Spencer (Emma Corrin) provides a much-needed fairytale to unite the British people, behind closed doors, the Royal family is becoming increasingly divided.”
Netflix recently revealed some of the new cast members for the fifth and sixth seasons of The Crown.
Imelda Staunton will be playing the show’s third and final Queen Elizabeth II, alongside Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret, Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip, and Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana.
However, Season 5 won’t debut on Netflix until at least 2022.
The Crown is available to buy on DVD on Amazon.
