‘Call the Midwife’ team already working on Season 11 – before Season 10 has aired!

Call the Midwife might have been delayed by Covid, but we’ve got some positive news on the show’s future.

Filming was postponed in March 2020 on the BBC’s hit period drama series about a group of nurse midwives working in the East End of London due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Luckily, production was able to continue safely last summer in time to get the annual feature-length festive special ready for last Christmas.

New seasons of Call the Midwife traditionally premiere in the UK in January each year.

However, the tenth season only wrapped its shoot this February, so we’re still waiting for the new episodes to air.

Featuring seven episodes rather than the usual eight, Season 10 is expected to premiere on BBC One in the UK within the next month or two.

It will then be broadcast in the US later this year on PBS.

But while we wait for the show’s return, the creative team are already hard at work on 2022’s season!

The official Call the Midwife Facebook page posted this exciting update earlier this week:

“We received a great picture today! It’s taken by our wonderful series writer Heidi Thomas, and shows her relaxing in the iconic Nonnatus House living room! That may not seem unusual for the drama’s creator, but in fact it’s a big deal for us.

“Heidi has not been able to visit the set for AGES, due to Covid restrictions. Her return marks a real homecoming… and an indication that plans are being drawn up for the filming of Series 11!!”

Call the Midwife writer Heidi Thomas commented: “Guess where I am! Back at Nonnatus House for the first time since October 2019, and in a room with colleagues for the first time in fifteen months, that’s where!”

The Facebook page’s team added: “Heidi’s visit to the studio was about more than just putting her feet up on Nonnatun furniture, though. This is where our production offices are, and Heidi was there to help plan our next instalment of filming.

“Due to the extraordinary disruption of the past year, the normal timetables for Call the Midwife production have undergone huge change, and our team have had had many adjustments to make. But we remain on target to begin filming for series 11!!”

Hinting at a premiere date announcement for Season 10 very soon, they teased: “When will you get to see the series we’ve just filmed? Answer: Watch this space!”

Story details for the new season of Call the Midwife are still under wraps…

But we do know it’ll be set in 1966 and that one major cast member won’t be back.

Season 9 is available on DVD on Amazon.
