‘Catherine the Great’ trailer: Helen Mirren stars in epic new historical series – watch!

A new trailer has been released for HBO and Sky’s Catherine the Great.

The upcoming four-part drama stars Helen Mirren (The QueenPrime Suspect) as the titular Empress of Russia, who wielded supreme power throughout Russia for nearly half of the 18th century.

The official synopsis reads: “The mini-series will follow Catherine towards the end of her reign and her passionate affair with Grigory Potemkin.

“Amid scandal, intrigue and immense conflict, this is a story of obsessive love. Unable to publicly marry and famously promiscuous, they develop a unique and devoted relationship, overcoming their adversaries and together shaping Russia as we know it today.”

Executive producer David M. Thompson previously revealed that the mini-series was Mirren’s own idea.

He said: “Helen Mirren came to me with the idea for Catherine the Great when we were working with her on Woman in Gold, saying it’s a part she’s always wanted to play. I’m delighted we’re now making the series and indeed we can’t think of anyone better for the role.

The cast also includes Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty), Gina McKee (Bodyguard) and Rory Kinnear (Skyfall).

Catherine the Great is expected to air this autumn on Sky Atlantic in the UK and Ireland, and on HBO in the USA and Canada.

The Queen is available on DVD on Amazon.
